Reader Question
Our 13 yr old cocker's recent blood test indicated hypothyroid , for which we placed her on an herbal med Thyroid Support. Recently she has been showing signs of extreme thirst. Three times she has urinated while she slept. Not typical. Does the medication cause thirst or incontinence? Thank you for any light you can shed here.

Answer from Our Team

Herbal "thyroid support" products aren't a proven treatment for hypothyroidism and may contain unknown amounts of thyroid hormone or iodine. Extreme thirst and leaking urine in an older dog need a vet check, since kidney disease, diabetes, Cushing's and urinary infection are common causes.

Ask your vet whether the diagnosis was confirmed, and about an FDA-approved levothyroxine product if treatment is needed.

See hypothyroidism in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
