Can a Scuffle Between Dogs Cause a Sprain?

Reader Question
I have a pit bull who is neutered and friendly with other dogs. He got out and went next door, where the neighbor's small dog barked at him; my dog was only sniffing and wagging his tail, and came back as soon as I called. The neighbor took her dog to the vet, who said it had a sprain. Could a sprain really be caused by an encounter like this?

Answer from Our Team

Yes, a sprain can happen during rough play or a scuffle. A dog can twist a leg, land awkwardly or be knocked over, and that can cause a sprain without any bite wounds. Sprains can also happen from an ordinary slip or misstep, so it can be hard to know exactly when an injury occurred.

Many mild sprains improve with a few weeks of rest, but a limp that doesn't improve should be rechecked by a vet. If you're worried about future encounters, keeping your dog on a leash or behind a secure fence when he's outside protects him and other dogs, and a calm conversation with your neighbor about expectations may help.
