Can a Dog Die From Infected Anal Glands?

It's rare. Most anal gland infections and abscesses are easy to treat and heal well. But an untreated abscess can spread infection into the surrounding tissue, and in rare cases infection can become serious, especially in a dog that is old or has other illnesses.
See a vet promptly for a hot, painful swelling beside the anus, a draining sore, fever, or a dog that stops eating. Also remember that a firm, painless lump near the anus in an older dog can be an anal sac tumor, which should be checked quickly.
