Reader Question
My 7yr old Bulldog got small hives followed by hair loss. The hair that she's losing comes off with ease and looks to have infected follicles. We are at loss and would love some advise on what can be done about this. The only area she is losing hair is on her right side from the middle of her back down to the top of her rear leg. Only about an 8" area. I cam take pics if helpful.

Answer from Our Team

Hair loss with infected-looking follicles after hives is often a bacterial skin infection (folliculitis), but demodex mites and ringworm can look similar.

Your vet can check with skin scrapings, cytology and a fungal culture. Most cases respond well to medicated shampoos once the cause is known.
