Breeding a Small Poodle-Yorkie Mix Who Had a Fast Heart Rate as a Puppy

Reader Question
when my 3/4 poodle 1/4 yorkie was 8 weeks old she was said to have a fast heart rate...her litter mates were all at least 2.4 lbs and bigger where she was only 1.8lbs. i recently got her vet checked and she is now 4.6lbs and healthy overall. when i asked the vet about the fast heart rate at 8 weeks she told me she didn't hear any abnormalities now but she would suggest an ultrasound to be sure before breeding. She is 1 1/2 years old now and not showing any signs of having heart trouble as the vet told me what to look for. Do you think it would be safe to allow her to have 1 litter of puppies?

Answer from Our Team

Puppies normally have faster heart rates than adults, and a small, nervous puppy at a vet visit can easily have a racing heart, so that finding alone isn't worrying. It's good that your vet hears nothing abnormal now.

Your vet's suggestion of an echocardiogram before breeding is sensible: it's the best way to check for a heart defect, such as a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), which is more common in these breeds and could stress her during pregnancy or be passed on. Small breeds such as Poodles and Yorkies are also prone to inherited problems such as kneecap (patella) issues, so ask your vet about other health screening too. Very small females can also have trouble giving birth, which is worth discussing before you decide.

See heart disease in dogs for breeds prone to heart disease.
