Breaking, Flaky Skin on a White Dog's Head

Reader Question
My dog started with this broken skin rash that when touched had this black flakes falling from it. We took him to the vet, she assumed it was an allergy, however after the dose or prendisone which I didnt like and will never give him again. It is starting to come back. It looks like the skin is breaking open in little sores. I am trying to figure this out on my own, having a white dog with many allergies is very expensive to keep taking to the vet. If it gets worse I will def take him back. I am giving some benadry and washing the area daily and putting polysporin on it.

Answer from Our Team

Sores with black flakes in an allergic white dog are often an infected allergic flare. Benadryl usually has little effect, and some antibiotic ointments are licked off.

Ask your vet about a swab test and non-steroid itch medicines. Keep the area clean and stop your dog from rubbing it.
