Boxer Paw Infection That Won't Heal, Now With White Bumps

Reader Question
My 5 and a half year old boxer has an infected paw that we are treating with antibodics, a soak with Epsom salt and a little bleach and neo-predef with tetracaine powder. We have been fighting this infection for a couple of months and have also tried Granulex typzyme spray, silver sulfadeazine, betadine soak even a green clay poultice. We have been covering it with a doggie boot to prevent licking. I am washing it 1-2 times a day with dial soap and let it "air out". Now these white, sticky bumps have appeared and I don't know what to do. I have spent hundreds of dollars on his paw and was hoping there is an otc treatment for the white bumps. Any suggestions? I am getting desperate!

Answer from Our Team

A paw infection that hasn't healed after months of treatment needs a different approach rather than more over-the-counter products. Common causes in Boxers include deep infection of the hair follicles between the toes, a buried foreign body such as a grass seed, allergies, and occasionally a tumor.

Please stop the bleach soak and harsh soaps, which can damage healing tissue. Ask your vet for a culture and a biopsy of the area, or a referral to a veterinary dermatologist; the white bumps should be sampled too.
