Bloody Diarrhea and Lethargy After Chewing a Yogurt Container

Reader Question
I let my dog lick out the empty plastic yogurt container, and she chewed it up, and vomited the next day. I found small chunks of plastic in the vomit. And she had diarhea, which was tainted with blood. Now she seems to be over the diarhea because she doesnt want out anymore. But she's just laying around sleeping now. Should I be concerned?

Answer from Our Team

Yes, please have her checked today. Swallowed plastic can scratch the gut, causing bloody diarrhea, and larger pieces can cause a blockage. A dog who vomited and is now lying around and sleeping more than usual may be in pain or getting dehydrated.

Go to an emergency vet if she vomits again, won't eat or drink, has a tender or swollen belly, or seems weak. Your vet may take X-rays, although many plastics don't show up clearly.

Our page on blood in dog stool explains when bloody stool is an emergency.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
