Blister Near the Tear Duct of an Older German Shepherd

Reader Question
The tissue close to the inner eye/ tear duct has a sort of blister that has formed. The eye has looked irritated for a few days thought it might be allergies. Would a eye drop with steriod and antibiotic treat this condition? Is there perhaps something else I can do? There is no colored discharge or pus.

Answer from Our Team

Please don't use steroid-antibiotic drops without your vet's advice; if there's any scratch on the eye, the steroid can make it much worse. A blister-like swelling near the inner corner could be a cyst, an inflamed tear sac, a growth on the third eyelid or eyelid, or swelling from allergies.

In an older German Shepherd, a vet should look at it. If it's on the third eyelid, ask about plasma cell inflammation (common in the breed) or a growth.
