Best Diet for a Dog With Chronic Yeast

Reader Question
What is the best diet for chronic yeast? As fars as grain free, limited ingredient ... the carbs are usually potato, potato starch, sweet potato and sometimes tapioca. All these AID in yeast production.

I have found brand (Nutrissca - potato free) but it has chicken fat as an ingredient. I am trying to give a unique protein, such as turkey, rabbit etc.

One vet said to give him a tablespoon of plain, non-fat yogurt a day and another said "No way, he could be allergic to dairy." Totally confusing!

His thyroid has been tested and is normal. And I have tried every trick in the vet books! The Malaseb shampoo that the FOURTH vet told me about recently seems to work the best of all I have tried.

One vet suggested Selsun Blue ... totally irritated him. Probably the heavy dyes and fragrance.(DAH)

Answer from Our Team

There's no good evidence that potatoes, starches or other carbohydrates feed skin yeast; the yeast that affects dogs lives on skin oils. Diet matters when a food allergy is driving the skin problem, and then the key is a strict elimination diet with a protein your dog hasn't eaten before, usually a prescription or hydrolyzed diet, for about 8 weeks.

Your success with the miconazole-chlorhexidine shampoo fits the evidence; it's the treatment with the strongest support. Ask your vet or a veterinary dermatologist about allergy testing and long-term allergy control, which is what usually stops yeast coming back.

See yeast infections on dogs' skin.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
