Beagle Mix With Watery Eyes That Are Worse in Winter

Reader Question
My 2 year old female Beagle mix a has watery eye discharge. She has always had it but seems to be more aggressive in the winter time. I have done nothing to treat her eyes except wipe the excess discharge off her fur. The watery discharge comes from her inner part of her eye; it is not all around her eye. It's equivalent to when a human crys and the tears run down the sides or your nose. She does not scratch or rub her face/eyes in anything to relieve any itching etc...In fact it doesn't seem to bother her at all. The discharge is usually clear, sometimes might be a cloudy and it does not smell. I feel that it might be allergies? Any home treatments or remedies you could suggest?

Answer from Our Team

Clear tears running down the side of the nose, with no discomfort, often come from tears not draining well, from eyelid shape or a narrow tear duct. Dry indoor heat and cold wind can irritate the eyes and make them water more in winter, and allergies are possible too.

Wipe the fur dry with a damp cloth, and rinse the eyes with sterile saline after windy walks. If the discharge becomes thick, colored or smelly, or she starts squinting, see your vet. Ask at her next checkup whether her tear ducts drain properly.
