Reader Question
My 12 year old basset has recently showna redness in her eye, and the nictitating membrane has moved up to partially cover the lower portion if the cornea. What is the corrective procedure?

Answer from Our Team

There isn't a single procedure for this, because a raised third eyelid is usually a sign of another problem rather than a problem in itself. With a red eye, common causes include eye pain from an ulcer or uveitis, glaucoma, dry eye or Horner's syndrome. Basset Hounds are one of the breeds prone to glaucoma, which is painful and can quickly cause blindness.

Please have her seen soon, and ask your vet to check the pressure in the eye. Treating the cause usually lets the third eyelid settle back.

See dog eye infections for the warning signs of glaucoma and other urgent eye problems.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
