Reader Question
Our 4 year old basset not overweight(!) goes for a nail and gland treatment about every 2 weeks. The folks there say they have never seen so much gland production and recommend we have a vet remove the glands. Does this make sense ? She does scoot if we dont keep up the visits but otherwise we dont see any of the symtems noted in the abouve literature.

Answer from Our Team

Emptying every 2 weeks is a lot, and when a dog needs it this often it's reasonable to discuss surgery. But first ask a vet, rather than the groomer, to examine her. A vet can check the glands from inside the rectum, look at the fluid for infection, and look for contributing causes such as allergies or soft stools. Frequent expression may itself irritate the sacs.

If medical options don't help, anal sac removal is a well-established surgery. Its main risks are infection and loss of bowel control, which is usually temporary, and it's best done by an experienced surgeon.

See anal gland treatment.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
