Are There Rubs or Supports That Help a Dog's Arthritic Joints?
Be careful with rubs and creams. Many human products contain pain-relief ingredients that can poison pets if they're licked off, including NSAID creams, and some essential oils can also irritate or harm dogs. Don't use any medicated cream on your dog unless your vet recommends it. Gentle massage, with no product, is fine if your dog enjoys it, and a warm (not hot) compress can ease stiffness.
Supportive devices do exist: custom braces (orthoses) for the knee, wrist or ankle, boots and toe grips for slippery floors, and support harnesses or slings for walks and stairs. Braces work best when fitted by a vet or rehabilitation therapist. Combine them with weight control, gentle regular exercise and vet-prescribed pain relief.
