An Inflamed Vulva With Pustules on a Spayed Bulldog Puppy

by Michelle

Reader Question
New foster dog, picked up today. 8 month old Female Spayed English Bulldog. Not sure how long this problem has been going on. Her vulva is inflamed, surrounded by blistering pustules(sp?) large ones toward her rear end, pimple like ones toward her belly.

Answer from Our Team

Thank you for fostering her. An inflamed vulva with pustules around it in a young spayed Bulldog is often caused by skin-fold infection. Many Bulldogs have extra skin folds that partly cover the vulva (a recessed vulva), and the trapped moisture lets bacteria and yeast grow. Puppy vaginitis and urinary infections can cause similar signs and often occur together.

Please book a vet visit. Your vet may check her urine, look at a skin sample under the microscope and prescribe treatment for the infection. Until then, gently clean the area with plain warm water, dry it well, and use a cone if she's licking. Don't put human creams on it.

If the folds keep causing trouble, keeping her at a healthy weight helps, and a small surgery to remove the extra skin works well for many dogs.
