A Rescue Shih Tzu Who Had a Dental Cyst and Five Teeth Removed

by Brenda

Reader Question
My Shih Tzu, Kisses, had a dentigerous cyst associated with an unerupted first premolar on her left jaw, along with periodontal disease. The dentist pulled 5 teeth. What scares me is she said this cyst can come back. I'm looking for a natural way to prevent this. I've been giving Kisses a supplement and putting probiotics and vitamin C in her mouth. I don't agree with giving her antibiotics on a regular basis. I paid $1,000 for this procedure and now the dentist is telling me she may have to do it again. I rescued Kisses and I don't have this kind of money. Please help us. Thank you.

Answer from Our Team

Kisses is lucky to have you. A dentigerous cyst forms around a tooth that never came through the gum, and small and short-nosed breeds like Shih Tzus are more prone to it. The cyst is less likely to come back when the buried tooth and the whole cyst lining are removed, so ask your vet dentist whether that was possible, whether any other teeth are still buried, and when to recheck with dental X-rays. Spotting any change early can mean a smaller procedure if one is ever needed.

Unfortunately, no natural product or supplement can prevent a cyst from forming or coming back. There is no good evidence that probiotics or vitamin C in the mouth help, and some supplements sold for pets can do harm, so check with your vet before using them. You're right that long-term antibiotics aren't the answer for gum disease either.

Once her mouth has healed and your vet says it's okay, what does help her remaining teeth is daily brushing with a dog toothpaste, dental products with the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal, and regular dental checks. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
