Answer from Our Team

Calling your vet is the right step. A firm lump in a testicle can have several causes, including infection or inflammation, an injury, or a tumor. Testicular tumors are most common in older unneutered dogs but can occur in younger ones, and many are curable with surgery.

Your vet will examine both testicles and may do an ultrasound. If a tumor is suspected, neutering removes the affected testicle and is usually the treatment. Many testicular tumors don't spread, and the tissue can be sent to a lab to confirm what it was.

Go sooner if the testicle becomes very swollen, hot or painful, or he seems unwell, because a twisted or infected testicle is an emergency.

See testicular cancer in dogs and neutering dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
