A Cyst on a Terrier's Back That Keeps Leaking

by Anita

Reader Question
Quinn is an 8 yr old Glen of Imaal Terrier in good health. Adopted one year ago with lump on his spine. Vet says it's a cyst and not to worry. It has been leaking yellowish fluid which hardens into sandy like deposits in his hair. This has happened since I got him. I clean it off but wonder if this is really OK.

Answer from Our Team

What you describe fits a type of skin cyst that has a small opening to the surface. These cysts are lined with skin and keep producing keratin, a greyish-yellow, cheesy or gritty material, and it often dries into crumbly, sandy flakes in the coat. They are usually harmless, so your vet's advice not to worry is reasonable.

A cyst that keeps leaking does have some downsides, though. The opening can let bacteria in, and a cyst that ruptures under the skin can cause a painful, inflamed lump. Keep the area clean with lukewarm water, trim the hair around it if that helps, and don't squeeze it. If it was diagnosed by feel alone, it's worth asking your vet for a quick needle sample to confirm what it is.

Because Quinn's cyst has been draining for over a year, ask your vet whether removing it makes sense. Taking out the whole cyst, including its lining, usually stops it for good, and it's often a short procedure. Have it checked sooner if it gets bigger, red, hot or painful, starts to bleed, or the discharge turns thick or smelly.
