A Black Spot on a Spayed Dog's Vulva

Reader Question
I have reviewed some similar concerns regards black spots on female canine vulvas. Our 6.5 year old female spayed black lab has been licking a bit more than usual in the area. Took a look to make sure there was not a problem and was surprised to see such a spot on her Vulva.

Answer from Our Team

A flat dark spot on the vulva is often just pigment. Licking or irritation can darken skin in that area. The extra licking is worth paying attention to, though, because licking in spayed females is often caused by vaginitis, a urinary infection or skin-fold infection around the vulva.

Ask your vet to check the area and her urine. Have the spot checked sooner if it's raised, grows, bleeds, or changes color or shape, or if you notice discharge, a bad smell or frequent urination.
