13-Year-Old Jack Russell With an Enlarged Heart and Fluid in the Lungs

Reader Question
My 13 year old jack russel terrier developed a cough so we took her to the vets and was informed, after x rays etc that she had an enlarged heart and this resulted in a build up of fluid in her lungs. She is a very lively dog and has a very good appitite. She pants a lot and there is this cough which occurs maybe 5 - 6 times aday. We are taking her to the univercity vetenery collage for a eco graphia scan which should show more. What are her chances of leading a normal life with the aid of medication?.

Answer from Our Team

Many dogs with heart failure from valve disease, the most common cause in small breeds, do well for months to a year or more on medication, and a lively dog with a good appetite is a good sign. The echocardiogram will show the cause and help your vet choose treatment, which usually includes a diuretic to clear the fluid and pimobendan.

Count her breathing while she's asleep each day; a rate that stays above 30 breaths a minute means the fluid may be coming back. Keep walks gentle, avoid salty treats, and call your vet if the cough gets worse or she struggles to breathe.
