Why One Eye Glows Red and the Other Green
by Stephanie
The glow comes from a mirror-like layer at the back of the eye called the tapetum, which helps dogs see in dim light. Its color varies from dog to dog. Where the tapetum is thin or missing, the camera sees the blood vessels behind it instead, and the eye glows red.
A missing tapetum is most common in blue-eyed dogs. Because a clear difference between a dog's two eyes can sometimes point to a problem at the back of one eye, eye specialists recommend having it checked. It's not an emergency. Mention it at her next checkup, along with any change in her vision or eyes.
