White Spots Spreading on a Young Rottweiler's Eyelids

by A reader

Reader Question
My one-year-old male Rottweiler, who eats a vegetarian diet, has white spots on the eyelids of both eyes. He was given an antiparasitic injection, but there was no improvement. Now the spots are gradually spreading. What treatment would help?

Answer from Our Team

White or pale spots that spread on the eyelids can be loss of skin pigment (which can happen with immune conditions such as vitiligo or uveodermatologic syndrome, or after inflammation), a skin infection, fungal infection, or mites. Some of these also affect the inside of the eye, so it's important that the eyes themselves are checked too.

Since an antiparasitic injection didn't help, ask your vet about skin scrapings, a fungal culture and possibly a small skin biopsy, which is often the quickest way to find the cause. If the eyes look red, cloudy or he squints, ask for an eye exam soon, as some of these conditions can harm vision if not treated early.

Also please make sure his vegetarian diet is complete and balanced for a growing large-breed dog. Ask your vet or a veterinary nutritionist to review it, because nutrient gaps can affect skin and coat. I can't recommend a specific medicine, since that depends on the cause your vet finds.
