Tiny Dark Spots in a Circle Around a Female Dog's Vulva
by A reader
Flat, evenly sized dark dots in a neat pattern are very often just normal pigment, either freckles or darkened hair follicles. The skin around the vulva often darkens with age, from licking, or with hormone changes, and the pigment can collect around each hair, making a regular pattern of dots.
Other things to rule out are blackheads (comedones), flea dirt and, less often, tiny blood spots under the skin, which can be a sign of a bleeding problem. Blood spots are usually red or purple rather than black and may show up on the gums or belly too.
If the spots don't change, aren't raised and she isn't licking or bothered, they're likely harmless. Have your vet check if they grow, become raised, bleed, or if you notice spots elsewhere, discharge, or changes in how she urinates.
