Skin-Like Tissue Suddenly Covering a Dog's Eye
by A reader
She is a Lab/Chow mix, 88lbs, 8 years old and in good health.
Can you tell me what this is and how to treat it at home?
Thank you
What you're seeing is most likely the third eyelid, a membrane in the inner corner of the eye that slides across when the eye sinks back. When it suddenly covers part of the eye and the eye looks smaller, common causes are pain in the eye (such as a scratch or ulcer), a nerve problem called Horner's syndrome, or something behind the eye pushing it back.
This isn't something to treat at home. Please have her seen by your vet within a day, sooner if she squints, has discharge, the eye looks cloudy or red, or she seems unwell. A quick exam and a stain test can show whether there's a painful eye injury, and eye drop tests can check for Horner's.
See dog eye problems and nerve problems affecting the eye.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
