Scraped, Raw Skin on a Dog's Penis That Isn't Healing

by A reader

Reader Question
The bulb at the base of my dog's penis looks like someone took a scratch pad to it. There are cuts, and sometimes the tissue underneath shows. It has bled. If he doesn't wear a cone, he almost always has it in his mouth. He's been on a steroid, an antibiotic and an antibiotic ointment twice a day for 2 weeks with no improvement. At times he walks like something is stuck in his rectum and is miserable. My vet and her associates have never seen anything like this.

Answer from Our Team

Raw, scraped tissue that doesn't heal, with constant licking, may be caused by injury from licking, an infection, an allergy, or less often a growth such as a transmissible venereal tumor or other tumor of the penis. Walking as if something is stuck in the rectum suggests pain around the anus, prostate or anal glands, which may be connected.

Ask your vet for a referral to a veterinary internal medicine specialist or surgeon, or for a biopsy of the area, which is the best way to find out what it is. Keeping a cone on full time is important, because licking keeps reopening the wounds.

Also ask your vet to check his prostate, anal glands and rectum. Please don't give up on him, since many causes are treatable once identified.
