Round, Fluid-Filled Sore on a Young Greyhound Mix

by A reader

Reader Question
My 1-year-old greyhound mix has a perfect fluid-filled circle on his leg and keeps licking it. I put a human steroid cream on it and it seemed to hurt him. What should I do?

Answer from Our Team

A round, fluid-filled sore that a young dog keeps licking has a few common causes. A hot spot comes up fast, oozes and is made worse by licking. A histiocytoma is a common harmless growth in dogs under 3 that often looks like a red, button-like bump. Ringworm, a fungal infection, often looks roughly circular. A bacterial skin infection can cause pimples and rings of peeling skin. Your vet can usually tell which one it is by looking at a sample under a microscope.

About the cream: please check with your vet before using any human cream. Dogs lick it off and swallow it, it only gives short-term relief without treating the cause, and steroids don't treat yeast or ringworm. If it seemed to sting, stop using it, and tell your vet what you applied.

Meanwhile, stop the licking with a cone or a light covering, and keep the area clean and dry. See your vet soon, and sooner if the sore spreads, smells or your dog seems unwell.
