Red Pimple-Like Bumps All Over a Pit Bull Mix
by A reader
Red bumps that start on the inner thighs and rear and then spread are very often a bacterial skin infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis or pyoderma). Short-coated breeds like pit bulls are prone to it, and it is usually set off by an allergy to something in the environment or food, even when fleas are under control.
Anti-itch shampoos often help for a short time but don't treat the infection. Please have your vet check him. A quick skin test can confirm infection, and treatment usually works well. Your vet can also suggest medicated wipes, mousses or sprays that work without a full bath, which may be easier with a dog who hates baths.
It also helps to keep up flea control all year, and, because he's very heavy, to work with your vet on weight loss, since skin folds trap moisture and make infections more likely.
