Lumps Like Testicles at the Base of a Neutered Dog's Penis

by A reader

Reader Question
My male neutered dog looks like he has a pair of testicles at the base of his penis. This just appeared on Friday. I have an appointment Monday, but I'm worried it could be related to his urinary tract.

Answer from Our Team

This is usually normal. At the base of a dog's penis there are two swellings called the bulbus glandis. They swell when the dog is excited or gets an erection, even in neutered dogs, and can look like testicles for a few minutes before going down again.

If the lumps stay swollen for more than an hour or two, are painful, or the penis can't go back into the sheath, that needs prompt care. Otherwise, it's fine to have your vet check at the appointment.
