Answer from Our Team

I'm so sorry for your loss. Intestinal cancer can be hidden for a long time, especially when it doesn't block the bowel, so dogs may have normal stools and appetite until very late. Sudden blindness near the end may have come from the cancer spreading, bleeding, or very high blood pressure.

There was likely nothing you could have seen that would have changed what happened. Many owners in your situation feel guilty, but these cancers are known for showing few or no signs.

Grief like this is real. Pet loss support groups, many run by veterinary schools, can help.

See intestinal cancer in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
