by A reader

Reader Question
I've got a lab bitch of three years , she is loosing lots of hair for last six months and when her fur / hair massaged with hand leaves a greasy and sticky layer on the hand and finger tips, what could be the reason....

Answer from Our Team

A greasy, sticky feel to the coat with hair loss is called oily seborrhea. In Labs it is often linked to allergies, a yeast overgrowth on the skin, or a hormone problem such as low thyroid, which also causes hair loss and is common in this breed.

Ask your vet about a skin tape test for yeast and bacteria, and a thyroid blood test. Treatment usually includes medicated shampoos that cut grease and control yeast, used regularly, plus treating any underlying cause.

A complete, good-quality diet and a vet-approved omega-3 supplement help skin health. See your vet sooner if the skin smells, itches or gets red.

See seborrhea in dogs.
