Caring for Vasculitis Sores on an Old Maltese's Ears
by A reader
Vasculitis damages small blood vessels, so the tips of the ears, foot pads and other areas with a thin blood supply can develop open sores. The most important part of treatment is controlling the vasculitis itself with the medicines your vet prescribes, since the sores heal once blood flow improves.
For the sores: keep them clean with saline or a gentle antiseptic your vet approves, apply the ointment as directed, and protect them from scratching and head shaking. Bandaging ear tips is tricky and can rub. Many vets prefer a light, non-stick dressing held by a soft wrap or snood, or a cone to prevent scratching. Ask your vet to show you how, and change it daily.
Watch for sores that get bigger, turn black, bleed or smell, and recheck with your vet if so. Also ask whether her vasculitis could be linked to a vaccine, drug, tick disease or food, since finding a trigger helps prevent flare-ups.
