Can a Dog Get a Sunburned Belly?
by A reader
Yes, dogs do get sunburned, especially on the belly, inner thighs, nose and ear tips, where the hair is thin and the skin is pale. Dogs that lie on their backs in the sun are at the highest risk. Repeated sunburn can cause thickened, crusty skin and, over years, a type of skin cancer, so it's worth preventing.
For mild sunburn, keep him out of strong sun while it heals, apply cool, damp cloths to soothe the skin, and ask your vet about a soothing, pet-safe cream. Avoid human sunscreens or creams that contain zinc oxide or salicylates, because dogs lick them off and they can be toxic. Pet-specific sunscreens are available.
Red sores can also come from other causes, like contact irritation from grass or cleaning products on the floor, allergies or a skin infection. If the sores don't fade within a week or so out of the sun, ooze, or bother him, have your vet take a look.
