Bumps on a Young Pit Bull After Hot Weather and a Cactus
by A reader
Do you have any idea what it could be?
Any of the three could be the cause, and short-coated breeds like pit bulls are especially prone to small bumps. Heat and sweat can cause a rash in skin folds and on the belly, a new treat can trigger hives or an allergy flare, and tiny cactus spines can cause small, firm, sometimes red bumps that may fester if a spine stays in the skin.
Young short-coated dogs also commonly get folliculitis, which is infected or inflamed hair follicles. It looks like small red bumps or pimples, often with a few crusts or patches where the hair stands up. It often starts on the belly, inner thighs or back.
For now, stop the new snacks to see if the bumps fade, keep him cool, and check closely under good light or with a magnifying glass for spines. Please don't squeeze the bumps. Have your vet look if they spread, become crusty or itchy, or don't settle within a week or two. A quick tape or swab test of the skin often shows whether it's an infection that needs treatment.
