Bumps on a Scottish Terrier After a Short Groom

by A reader

Reader Question
I have a seven year old Scottish Terrier. He has recently developed small bumps or pimples on his skin. They are mostly on his back and neck. I didn't notice them until I had him groomed really short. They don't seem to bother him at all, no scratching or tenderness. Once they have gone down they act just like a sunburn acts on a human. They start the circular pattern of a two day old sunburn and start to peel. It looks like he has a black and white polka dot sweater on. The groomer thought it was just dry skin. Any suggestions?

Answer from Our Team

Small bumps that appear after a very short clip, then flatten into round, peeling circles, are most often a mild bacterial skin infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis). Close clipping can irritate the follicles and let bacteria in. As the bumps heal, they commonly leave round, scaly rings with a darker or lighter center, which can look a lot like peeling sunburn.

Sunburn is possible on dogs with very short or thin hair, especially on lightly pigmented skin, but on a black-skinned dog with a fresh clip, infection is more likely. Dry skin alone doesn't usually cause bumps.

Ask your vet to look at it, since a quick skin cytology test can confirm infection, and some dogs need a medicated shampoo or other treatment. It's also worth asking the groomer to leave his coat a bit longer next time. Go sooner if the spots become itchy or sore, spread quickly, or ooze.
