Brown Spot on a Hunting Beagle's Eye

by Nadia

Reader Question
A month ago my Beagle had a problem with his eye. There was no discharge, but his right eye looked smaller. It healed very fast. This happened after he spent 10 hours hunting a deer. Two days ago he ran off hunting again for three hours, and now he has a brown spot on his pupil and his eye looks smaller again. Tomorrow is Saturday. What could it be?

Answer from Our Team

Please treat this as urgent and get him seen today. If your regular vet is closed, go to an emergency clinic. An eye that looks smaller is often a sign of pain, because dogs squint and pull a sore eye back into the socket.

Hunting dogs often scratch their eyes on branches and plants, and plant material can get stuck in or behind the eye. A new brown spot on the front of the eye after an injury can be iris tissue plugging a wound in the cornea, which is an emergency, or pigment or something stuck on the eye. Only an eye exam can tell.

Until he's seen, put a cone on him to stop rubbing, don't press on the eye, and don't put anything in it. If the problem keeps coming back after hunts, ask your vet to check for a foreign body behind the eyelids.

See eye injuries and scratched eyes.
