Blood-Filled Bumps on an Old Coonhound's Eyelids

by A reader

Reader Question
this dog is a Walker coonhound, about 12/13 yrs. In good shape. Has cataracts. In last several mos. has developed blood filled "pimples" first on one eyelid, then the other. the dog does not seem to be bothered bu them - does not scratch or rub eye. It appears that most of the pimple ois no the exterior surface of the lid, but recently I did see that the blister-likr growth also is on the underside of the lid.

The dog is not mine - I take care of him 2x/wk. Family is not interested in providing much care (or love). Dog does not have a regular vet and does not get regular care.

any ideas about what the problem might be, what TX might be.

Answer from Our Team

Blood-filled blister-like bumps on the eyelids of an older dog are often small blood vessel growths. Most are benign (hemangiomas), but some can be a cancerous form (hemangiosarcoma), especially on lightly pigmented skin exposed to sun. Other common eyelid growths in old dogs, like oil-gland growths, can also bleed.

Since the bump is now on the inside of the lid too, it may start to rub the eye. A vet can usually remove small eyelid growths with little fuss, and testing it tells you whether it's benign. If the family isn't able to take him, it might help to talk with them about a low-cost clinic.

Watch for bleeding, fast growth, squinting or tearing, and keep him from rubbing the eye.
