Bleeding From the Eyes and High Blood Pressure in an Older Dog
by A reader
High blood pressure can cause bleeding in the eyes, and if the bleeding stops with treatment, that strongly suggests blood pressure is the cause. In dogs, high blood pressure is usually caused by another condition, most often kidney disease, and also Cushing's disease, diabetes or thyroid problems. Treating it usually needs to be lifelong, unless the underlying cause can be cured.
Please ask your vet whether she should stay on the medicine long term, and about blood and urine tests to look for an underlying cause. Regular blood pressure checks help the vet set the right dose. Don't stop the medicine without your vet's advice, since high pressure can come back and damage the eyes, kidneys and brain.
For a fearful dog, ask about medicine to give before vet visits to reduce her stress, and about doing blood pressure checks when she is calm, since stress can make the readings higher.
