Black Spot Like a Second Pupil in My Dog's Eye

by Alen

Reader Question
A few weeks ago my family and I noticed a black spot in one of my dog's eyes. He's a German Shepherd and Rottweiler mix. My mom thinks it's been growing. It looks almost like a second black pupil in his right eye. I called an eye specialist, but they wanted to charge $200 just for the first checkup. I looked up his signs online and found eye melanoma, and I think that's what he has. I'm scared it will get worse. I'm not working right now and money is tight. What should I do?

Answer from Our Team

I'm sorry you're worried. A dark spot in the colored part of the eye isn't always a tumor. It can be a freckle of pigment, or a uveal cyst, which is a small, dark, fluid-filled ball that's usually harmless. When it is a tumor, about 80% of the dark tumors inside dogs' eyes are benign, and spread outside the eye is uncommon.

Even so, a spot that's growing should be checked, because benign tumors can still cause problems inside the eye, such as glaucoma. If a specialist visit isn't possible right now, your regular vet can take a first look, check the eye pressure, and tell you how urgent it is. In the meantime, take a clear photo of the eye every few weeks in the same light so you can see whether it changes.

Go sooner if the eye turns red or cloudy, he squints or seems in pain, the pupil changes shape, or the eye looks bigger. Many clinics offer payment plans, and charities and veterinary schools can sometimes help with costs.

See dark spots and melanoma inside the eye.
