Belly Skin Turning Dark on Two Young Pugs
by A reader
Any suggestions?
Darkening of the skin on the belly and inner thighs is very common in Pugs and other dark-pigmented breeds as they grow, and it is usually normal pigment developing. When it happens with no itch, redness, odor or hair loss, and the puppies are well, it's usually nothing to worry about.
Darkening can also follow long-term irritation, like allergies, yeast or rubbing, so watch for scratching, licking, a greasy feel, smell or thickened skin. Those are reasons to have your vet look.
Mention it at their next puppy visit. A quick look and, if needed, a tape test of the skin can confirm it is just pigment.
