Behavior Change After Entropion Surgery

Reader Question
Our newly adopted dog, who's 2 to 3 years old, recently had surgery for entropion. Since he recovered and finally lost the cone, his behavior has changed. He's become more guarded, especially with my husband. Could this be because of changes in his eyesight?

Answer from Our Team

Entropion surgery corrects the eyelid. It doesn't usually affect vision, unless the cornea was scarred from the lids rubbing before surgery. It's worth asking your vet to check his vision and comfort at a recheck. They can also make sure nothing is still rubbing or irritating the eye, because a sore eye can make a dog defensive.

The surgery period itself can affect behavior too. In an owner survey, about a third of pets interacted less with other animals in the home while wearing a cone, and some became more anxious. A newly adopted dog is also still learning to trust his new home, and some dogs are warier of one person than another.

In the meantime, let him come to your husband rather than the other way around, and pair your husband with good things like meals, treats and walks. If his vision turns out to be reduced on one side, approach from the side he sees best and speak first. If the guarding continues or gets worse, ask your vet about a behaviorist.
