Bald Patches After a Course of Antibiotics in a Min Pin

by A reader

Reader Question
My 8-year-old Min Pin had a course of antibiotics six weeks ago for kennel cough. He had slight skin flaking before this, and it has now grown into two 1-inch bald patches on his back. What could it be?

Answer from Our Team

Flaking skin that turns into round bald patches is unlikely to be a reaction to antibiotics. More often it's a skin infection, ringworm, demodex mites, or seasonal or pattern hair loss, which is common in Min Pins and other small breeds, especially on the back and flanks.

A skin scraping, fungal culture and quick skin swab can tell these apart, and if they're all negative, a small biopsy may be needed. Many cases of pattern hair loss are cosmetic.

See your vet sooner if the patches spread, get red or crusty, or he's itchy or unwell.

See hair loss in dogs.
