An Itchy Patch on a Shih Tzu's Back With Black Flecks

by A reader

Reader Question
My shih tzu has a patch on his back, far below his shoulders and about two inches from his tail, that has always had a little less hair. This patch also develops small, red, irritated bumps from time to time, and it always has little black flecks covering it. These flecks do not move, and some are embedded in the skin. If you squeeze the skin, they do come out and if smeared on a tissue appear dark red to light brown. I know he has mild itchy allergies which are under control with an antihistamine. I would love to know what is going on with that patch on his back, as it seems to be the itchiest spot for him.

Thank you!

Answer from Our Team

Black flecks that turn reddish brown when smeared on a damp tissue are almost certainly flea dirt (flea feces, which contains digested blood). The lower back near the tail is the classic spot for flea allergy, which causes intense itching, bumps and thin hair there, even when you never see a live flea.

Treat with a modern, vet-recommended flea product all year round, and treat every pet in the house at the same time. Wash bedding in hot water and vacuum well, since most of the flea life cycle happens in the home. It can take 6 to 8 weeks to clear completely.

If the patch stays red or the bumps don't settle, ask your vet about treating a skin infection there. An antihistamine alone often doesn't control flea allergy itch.
