A Young Golden Retriever Who Stopped Eating and Is Losing Weight
by A reader
A growing puppy who stops eating and loses weight should be seen by a vet soon. Common causes include intestinal worms or Giardia, infections, eating something that's causing a partial blockage, liver or kidney problems, and an inherited condition called a liver shunt, which can show up at this age.
Bring a fresh stool sample to the vet. Blood tests and possibly X-rays can find the cause. Go sooner if she vomits, has diarrhea, seems weak or wobbly, or isn't drinking.
Until she's seen, offer small amounts of a bland, easily digested food, and don't change foods repeatedly. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
