A White Penis Sticking Out on a Young Neutered Dog

by A reader

Reader Question
I have a 2-year-old neutered Pug/Shih Tzu. His penis was sticking out, and it was white! What is it? Should I be concerned?

Answer from Our Team

The penis can look pale or white when it first comes out, before blood flows in. Small dogs often have the tip poke out during excitement, rest or after peeing, and it goes back in by itself.

It is a concern if it stays out for more than about 30 minutes, looks dry, swollen, dark red or purple, or he licks it constantly. If it stays out, keep it moist with water or a water-based lubricant and contact your vet.
