A Valley Fever Sore That Came Back

by A reader

Reader Question
My dog was diagnosed with valley fever a few years ago because she had a large sore. I treated her and she got better, but now the sore is back. What is a good treatment other than the two antifungal drugs I used in the past? Also, how can I help her immune system fight it?

Answer from Our Team

Valley fever can come back after treatment, especially if the course was short or the infection had spread to the skin or bones. A sore returning usually means the fungus is active again, so please see your vet. They will usually do a blood test for antibody levels and may sample the sore.

Treatment is still with antifungal medicine, usually for months. If one drug didn't fully work or caused side effects, your vet can choose another in the same or a different class, and some dogs need lifelong treatment at a lower dose to prevent relapse.

There isn't a proven supplement to boost the immune system against valley fever. Good nutrition, keeping her at a healthy weight and avoiding dusty areas where the fungus lives can help. Regular blood tests while she's on antifungals are important to check liver function.
