A Sudden Swelling Under a Young Schnauzer's Upper Eyelid

by A reader

Reader Question
I have a miniature schnauzer who's a year and a half old and I've attached a picture of what's going on with her.

It just started today and I'm hoping since it's Sunday, to get her an appointment with her vet tomorrow.

Any ideas as to what it could be? I don't think it's cherry eye because it's not in the typical spot. It seems to be under her top eyelid.

Answer from Our Team

I can't see the photo here, but a sudden swelling under the upper eyelid in a young dog is often an allergic reaction (such as from an insect sting), a blocked or infected eyelid gland, or something stuck under the lid, like a grass seed. A pink lump in an unusual spot can also be a less typical form of cherry eye.

Seeing your vet tomorrow is a good plan. Until then, keep her from rubbing it, and you can gently flush the eye with saline. Go to an emergency clinic today if her face or muzzle swells, she has hives, trouble breathing or vomiting, or if the eye looks cloudy or she keeps it closed.
