A Sudden Lump and Open Wounds on a Small Dog's Head

by A reader

Reader Question
It started as swelling over her eye with discharge. That evening the swelling had almost gone. The next afternoon, after being on the porch, she had a large, firm knot on her head, further back than the first swelling. The next day her hair looked different on one side, and she had open wounds with clotted blood, and the whole lump area was red and blotchy. I cleaned the wounds as best I could and it looks a lot better today, but I need to know what to do next. Our only local vet is very expensive. She's a small Yorkie, Poodle and Chihuahua mix with seasonal skin allergies. She scratches her legs and rear but never her head. I need help with her allergies too.

Answer from Our Team

Sudden swelling that moves, followed by a firm lump and then small open wounds, is very typical of an insect or spider bite or sting, or a small bite wound from another animal, which can turn into an abscess. An abscess often swells, then bursts and drains, leaving open wounds, which can then start to look better.

Keep cleaning the area gently with lukewarm saline once or twice a day, and stop her scratching it. Watch closely for signs it's getting worse: more swelling, pus, a bad smell, fever, low energy or not eating. If any of these happen, she needs a vet, since an abscess may need draining and antibiotics. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.

For her seasonal allergies, regular bathing with a gentle, soothing dog shampoo, wiping her legs and belly after walks, and good flea control all help. Talk to a vet about safe allergy medicines for her size, rather than giving human medicines without advice.
