A Stud Dog Unable to Mate After a Long Tie
by A reader
Sudden mating problems after a long tie could come from an injury to the penis, the bone in the penis, or the sheath during the tie, pain (for example, from the back, hips or prostate), or a learned reluctance after a painful experience. Since collection by hand works, the problem may be pain, a narrow sheath opening, or a behavioral block during natural mating.
Ask your vet for a thorough exam of his penis, sheath and prostate, and of his back and hind legs, and possibly X-rays to check the bone of the penis. A veterinary reproduction specialist (theriogenologist) can help with both diagnosis and options like artificial insemination in the meantime.
