A Spreading Red, Scaly Patch Around a Lab Mix's Nose
by A reader
She is an other wise healthy approximately 8-9 year old female black lab/chow mix dog. She has never had any health issues besides being treated for pink eye approximately a 1 and 1/2 years ago after she captured a ground hog. There have been no changes in her diet, appetite, skin condition on the rest of her body, or her coat. She is not taking any medications. She weighs about 50 pounds and jogs with me frequently for 2-3 mile distances on a regular basis.
A reddish patch that spreads around the nose with the top of the nose becoming dry and scaly can be an infection (bacterial, fungal or demodex), a contact reaction (for example, to plastic bowls or something she sniffs or digs in), sunburn, or an immune condition that affects the nose, such as discoid lupus or pemphigus, which often cause loss of the nose's dark color and crusting.
Please have your vet look at it, since early diagnosis helps with immune conditions. A skin scraping, swab and small biopsy are the usual tests. Switch to stainless steel bowls, limit strong sun on her nose, and don't put human creams on it unless your vet agrees.
