A Spreading Cluster of Papules on a Dog's Neck

by A reader

Reader Question
I have taken my dog to a dermatologist, he was tested for several skin conditions, all were negative which included bacterial and demodex. Also, the specialist determined the papule was not the papiloma virus. His mother is 9 yrs old and has a small spot in the same area on the neck but hers didn't spread. If someone could shed some light on what to do or what it may be I would greatly appreciate the insight so I could stop it from spreading further. Thank you.

Answer from Our Team

When bacteria, demodex and warts have been ruled out, other causes of spreading little bumps on the neck include a contact reaction (for example, to a collar or flea product), allergy, sterile inflammatory conditions, and less often immune skin disease or skin lymphoma. A similar spot on his mother points toward something they share, like a collar type, bedding or product, or an inherited skin tendency.

The most useful next step is a small skin biopsy, if it hasn't been done. Ask your dermatologist whether one could give a definite answer. Meanwhile, try removing the collar at home or switching to a different material, and avoid applying products to the neck.
